What are digital X-rays?
Digital X-rays are a modern imaging technology that captures detailed images of your teeth, bones, and surrounding tissues using electronic sensors instead of traditional film. Dr. Hickson uses digital radiography to diagnose cavities, infections, bone loss, and other dental issues with greater accuracy while exposing patients to significantly less radiation than conventional X-rays.
How do digital X-rays differ from traditional X-rays?
Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays, produce instant images without chemical processing, provide higher quality images that can be enhanced and magnified, are more environmentally friendly, and can be easily stored and shared electronically. The images appear on a screen within seconds, allowing us to review them with you immediately.
Are digital X-rays safe?
Yes, digital X-rays are extremely safe. Dr. Hickson uses the latest technology that emits significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays - comparable to the amount of radiation you're exposed to during a short airplane flight. We also use protective lead aprons and thyroid collars, and only take X-rays when medically necessary for diagnosis and treatment planning.
How often do I need dental X-rays?
The frequency depends on your individual oral health needs. Most patients need X-rays once a year, while others may need them more or less frequently. We may recommend X-rays more often if you have gum disease, a history of cavities, or are undergoing certain treatments. Dr. Hickson follows guidelines that minimize radiation exposure while ensuring proper diagnosis.
What can digital X-rays detect?
Digital X-rays reveal issues invisible to the naked eye including cavities between teeth, infections at the tooth root, bone loss from gum disease, abscesses, impacted teeth, developmental abnormalities, cysts or tumors, and tooth decay beneath existing fillings. Dr. Hickson uses X-rays to catch problems early when they're easier and less expensive to treat.
Do digital X-rays hurt?
No, taking digital X-rays is completely painless. You'll bite down on a small sensor or positioning device while the image is captured. Some patients with a strong gag reflex may find this briefly uncomfortable, but we can use techniques to make the process easier. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes.
Why are X-rays necessary if my teeth feel fine?
Many dental problems develop without causing pain or visible symptoms until they become serious. X-rays allow us to detect cavities, infections, and bone loss in early stages when treatment is simpler and more successful. Regular X-rays are an essential preventive tool that helps Dr. Hickson protect your oral health and save you from more extensive treatment later.
Can I refuse dental X-rays?
While you can decline X-rays, doing so may limit our ability to provide complete care. Without X-rays, Dr. Hickson cannot see between teeth, below the gumline, or inside teeth to detect problems. We only recommend X-rays when necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you have concerns about radiation exposure, we're happy to discuss the minimal risks and significant benefits.
Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?
Digital dental X-rays are considered safe during pregnancy, especially with proper shielding. The radiation dose is extremely low, and we use lead aprons to protect you and your baby. However, we typically postpone routine X-rays until after delivery unless there's a dental emergency requiring immediate diagnosis. Always inform us if you're pregnant or might be pregnant.
How are digital X-ray images stored?
Digital X-rays are stored electronically in your patient record, making them easily accessible for future reference and comparison. This digital storage eliminates the need for physical film storage, allows us to quickly retrieve images during appointments, and makes it simple to share images with specialists if needed. Your images are securely stored and protected.
Can digital X-rays detect oral cancer?
Digital X-rays can reveal certain changes that may indicate oral cancer, such as bone destruction or unusual growths. However, they're just one diagnostic tool. Dr. Hickson also performs visual and tactile examinations of your soft tissues during regular checkups. Early detection through comprehensive screening - including X-rays and clinical examination - provides the best outcomes.
Are dental X-rays covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover diagnostic X-rays as part of preventive care, typically once per year for routine bitewing X-rays and every 3-5 years for full mouth series. Coverage varies by plan, so our team will verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage before taking X-rays.
